Controls & key rebinding

No story spoilers—setup and platform notes only.

The demo expects keyboard + mouse on PC. Web and download builds may differ slightly—v0.1.10 on Windows adds key rebinding that the browser build may lack.

Difficulty: Easy

Before you start

  • Launch the tutorial and note the on-screen prompts for attack, jump, dodge, block, and parry.
  • If a key feels awkward, download v0.1.10 and rebind before practicing parries.
  • On laptops, disable filter keys / sticky keys if Shift or Ctrl behave oddly (a known Windows quirk KitDa mentioned).

Step-by-step checkpoints

Defaults: Out-of-box layout
  • Movement uses WASD in most builds—verify in the tutorial overlay.
  • Combat actions are split across mouse and keyboard; three-finger play is why mobile is hard.
  • Check itch.io install notes if keys differ between WebGL and downloadable builds.
Rebinding: v0.1.10 download only
  • Key rebinding was added in demo v0.1.10 for the Windows zip—not guaranteed on Web v0.1.00.
  • Put parry on a finger you can reach while holding movement keys.
  • After rebinding, replay the tutorial to muscle-memory new bindings.
Platforms: Web vs Windows
  • Browser: click Play on this site to open the itch Unity WebGL build in a new tab.
  • Windows: unzip ApostateVerity_Demo_win_0.1.10.zip and run ApostateVerity.exe.
  • No official macOS/Linux builds listed at the time of writing—check itch for updates.

Common mistakes & fixes

MistakeWhat to do instead
Downloading random APKs for mobileUse official itch.io only—see our Download page for fake APK warnings.
Assuming Web and download builds are identicalPrefer Windows v0.1.10 for rebinding and latest balance tweaks.
Ignoring Windows Sticky Keys interfering with Shift/CtrlDisable accessibility toggles or rebind away from problematic keys.

Clear checklist

  • Confirmed movement and combat bindings in tutorial.
  • Rebound keys on v0.1.10 if defaults are uncomfortable.
  • Stable input on chosen platform before Tree Boss attempts.

Comfortable bindings matter more here than in slow VNs—parry windows are tight.

Extra notes

Controller support is not emphasized in the demo—keyboard/mouse is the supported PC experience on itch.io.
