Combat basics

Combat basics — defend first, punish second

Mechanic-focused tips for the demo tutorial and early enemies.

Apostate Verity is closer to Sekiro than button-mashing action. Enemies punish panic dodges. Your defensive toolkit—block, parry, dodge—has specific jobs.

Difficulty: Medium

Before you start

  • Complete the in-game tutorial without skipping defensive prompts.
  • Fight the first normal enemies using block-first habits before attempting parry-only runs.
  • Note which enemy attacks bounce your weapon—those are often parry candidates.

Step-by-step checkpoints

Defense: Block vs parry vs dodge
  • Block: default answer to quick strings when you are unsure of parry timing.
  • Parry: use on slow, telegraphed heavies and selected boss swings—high reward, high risk.
  • Dodge: create space or avoid grabs/AOE—do not replace every block with a roll.
Offense: When to attack
  • Punish after successful parries or when an enemy recovers from a whiff.
  • Light combos are safer on trash mobs; save heavy swings for staggered targets.
  • Multi-weapon swapping exists in the demo—pick one weapon until you know its reach.
Resources: Healing & stamina
  • Healing animations lock you in place—only use when the enemy is idle or far.
  • If you block too much without countering, pressure never drops—parries break tempo.
  • Equipment and currency systems appear in the demo—explore after you are comfortable with defense.

Common mistakes & fixes

MistakeWhat to do instead
Treating parry as the only defensive optionBlock first, parry the attacks you have learned—expand your parry list gradually.
Button mashing during enemy combosDefend through the string, then attack once.
Switching weapons mid-fight without knowing movesetsMaster one weapon in the demo area before experimenting.

Clear checklist

  • Used block safely on fast attacks.
  • Landed parries on at least one enemy type consistently.
  • Attacked only after defensive success or enemy recovery.
  • Reached the Tree Boss with consumables remaining.

Players coming from pure dodge action games often struggle until they treat defense as rhythm, not reaction spam.

Extra notes

Early enemy defeats can trigger R18 scenes—combat competence is the practical way to see less of them during learning runs.
